Counselling for individuals

We live in a world full of challenges that can sometimes be overwhelming and confusing. It can be a difficult journey to reach the point where you decide to seek therapy and its a brave step to take the initiative towards changing things that are not working in your life or that are causing you distress. I hold a fundamental belief that each human being aspires to achieve wholeness and reaching their full potential. I believe in change and growth and that this journey is a continual and progressive process.

We each mark a place on a wide spectrum of human difference; our appearance, interests, abilities, values, preferences, gender, and sexuality. I appreciate individual difference and acknowledge you as the unique individual that you are. I am committed to your personal growth, and to creating an open, collaborative, warm, and non-judgemental place for you to explore and recognise your strengths, creativity, choice and personal identity. I believe that understanding, knowing and believing in who we are as individuals can help us to live bravely in our own skin and live the lives we want.

When you are ready for personal change

Individual therapy isn’t necessarily a short process or a quick fix. I believe it can be important to understand the reasons behind the issues that bring you to counselling, which are often rooted in the past. The aim of counselling is to help you explore areas of your life and history that may be causing you trouble in your present. Our childhood relationships influence the adult that we become, shaping our patterns of communication, emotional experience, intimate relationships, and way of living in the world. We have the capacity to overcome our early experiences and counselling can facilitate a better understanding of how experience has shaped your identity, values, beliefs, and emotional difficulties. Without understanding our own history, I believe it is hard to achieve the change we hope for in the present.

My work is informed and inspired by humanistic (relational, person- centred), psychodynamic, attachment focused theories, somatic approaches,  CBT, transactional analysis and mindfulness.

Beginning counselling:

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and for you to get a sense of how it feels to work with me. When we first meet we will look together at what is happening for you, how it is affecting different areas of your life, and what you might like to be different. By the end of the session you will have a clearer understanding if beginning therapy is appropriate for your needs and able to decide if I am the right therapist for you to work with. Please don’t hesitate to contact me so we can begin to explore whether I might be that person.
